Break or end of fiber shows 0 ft/m - Fiber OneShot™
The Fiber OneShot™ will report the distance to the first reflective event that exceeds the threshold set for reflectance. If you see 0 ft/m, the Fiber OneShot has determined that the connection to the SC Port has exceeded the reflectance threshold.
SC/APC connector has been inserted into the meter The connector in the Fiber OneShot is an SC/UPC (Ultra Physical Contact). If you insert an SC/APC (Angled Physical Contact), there will be an air gap resulting in excessive reflectance. If you are testing SC/APC links, you must use an SC/UPC to SC/APC launch cord and ensure it complies with GR-325-CORE specifications. |

SC/PC connector has been inserted into the meter
It is a very high probablity that if you insert an SC/PC connector into the Fiber OneShot, it will report 0 ft/m as a result of poor reflectance. It may work some times and not others. PC connectors typically have a reflectance below -35 dB.
Port and or connector is dirty
It goes without saying that both the launch cord and Fiber OneShot port need to be clean. If you are using anything other than > 98% IPA, there is a chance of a thin film being left behind that will create additional reflectance. A far better solution than IPA is something called a Hybrid Cleaner. These cleaners are more agressive than IPA, evaporate quicker and provide a level of antistatic properties on the end faces of fibers and fiber ports.
The fiber is broken in the first 1 meter or 3ft
The minimum distance to the first reflective open is 1 m or 3 ft between -40 dB and -14 dB. It therefore makes sense to use a test cord than is greater than 1 m or 3 ft.
